Council on EU-Azerbaijan cooperation considered on Monday the course of settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
“The EU has confirmed that the status quo is unacceptable, and the solution of the conflict remains our top priority,” says the statement issued after the meeting.
The 13th meeting of Azerbaijani and European representatives in the framework of the Cooperation Council was held in Brussels today. Azerbaijani delegation was headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov.
The EU was represented by the Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy Štefan Füle, and Foreign Minister of the Republic of Cyprus Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis.
The head of the Cyprus Ministry of Foreign Affairs on behalf of the EU expressed her concern that the negotiations on the settlement of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh did not produce results in 20 years.
EU officials have expressed concern about armed incidents on the contact line, urging the parties to refrain from aggressive statements and actions that could increase tensions in the region.
Füle reiterated the determination of the EU to assist the conflicting parties in the implementation of confidence-building measures, which are designed to bring together their public.
Mammadyarov, in his turn, thanked the European partners for their support in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. “We need to strive for the elimination of the status quo, since everyone is losing because of the current state of affairs,”, – he said.
