Azerbaijani sources report that Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili calls on citizens of the country, both Christians and Muslims to show respect to the country’s traditional stance against religious conflict.
“The situation observed recently in some regions is completely unacceptable: Orthodox Christians and Muslims are opposing each other… I want to emphasize that such a confrontation is unacceptable for the Georgian people. For centuries, Orthodox Christians lived peacefully with the followers of other religions, and history does not know even one case of disharmony rooted in religious causes.
This is why recent increases in tension are so provocative and are aims to discredit Georgia.
Freedom of religion is the constitutional right of every citizen of this country, and our government will not allow the limitation of this right for anyone. Law enforcement agencies are investigating every violation of the law, and all who participated in the illegal and totally infamous confrontation, will be severely punished.
As a Prime Minister of this country, I take responsibility and I promise that all citizens, no matter to what denomination they belong, will be guaranteed a peaceful life,” a statement of Bidzina Ivanishvili said.
