Reporter of “First News and Analyses” Hovhan Mandakuni notes that official Yerevan received the information of Barack Obama’s victory in the U.S. presidential election with obvious enthusiasm.
“Perhaps the reason of the excitement is that the Russian-American relationship will remain in so-called “moderate” condition of competition, which could be changed by the victory of Romney.”
The reporter writes that “moderation” of Russian-American relations is a good opportunity for the maneuver, noting the fact that in such circumstances it is easier to maintain good relations both with the U.S., and Russia. However, he stresses that “moderate” relationship with the United States and Russia can not last forever.
“The thing is that “moderate” Russian-American relations will inevitably come to an outcome of some competition. And, more likely, this outcome will be in favor of the U.S., because Russia does not even have the needed resources.”
According to Mandakuni, Armenia should use the moment not to maneuver, but modernize, i.e. maneuver to modernization, which means neutralizing consistent and targeted influence of Russian. ““Moderation” of Russian-American relations, should not be perceived as something heavenly, but only as a possibility, a possibility that should be used with great speed.”
Referring to the question whether official Armenia can use this moment productively, Mandakuni writes that Yerevan not only cannot use it but also uses it for completely different purpose- for clarification of narrow personal or party relationship between political powers at the expense of the state.
“The current moment has historical significance for Armenia, and it is a mitigating circumstance for the country’s current tragic situation. But Armenia, so-called political subjects are thinking only about power, how to take or keep their power.”
