In the near future NATO aims to increase its presence in the South Caucasus, and in this respect, a willingness to deepen cooperation has both Armenia, and the Atlantic Alliance. This was stated by NATO special envoy for the South Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai.
He noted that NATO does not want to impose its presence to the countries, and aims to offer more opportunities for cooperation.
“Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan want to take advantage of these opportunities and in the coming months in the proposed menu there will be something more,” – said Appathurai.
He especially praised the cooperation with Armenia, pointing to an increase in the number of the country’s peacekeeping contingent in Afghanistan and the country’s return to the mission in Kosovo.
“I think here, in Yerevan, there is willingness to deepen relations with NATO. I can also assure you that NATO is willing to deepen relations with Armenia and the South Caucasus on the whole. And the purpose of my visit to Yerevan and the meetings with the ministers of defense and foreign affairs is to find out what we can do together in the future “- stressed Appaturay.
Note that James Appathurai is participating in an international conference in the framework of the NATO week in Armenia.
In addition, according to the Special Representative of the Secretary General of NATO, Georgia has a good chance to join the alliance too.
