NATO has to have good relations both with Georgia and Russia, said the representative of the Secretary-General of NATO in the South Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai on Thursday, October 18, in Tbilisi, at a joint press conference with acting Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze.
“Relations between Georgia and Russia, NATO and Russia – a difficult question. The important thing for us in NATO is that we have always had the position that a good relationship should be both between Georgia and NATO, and also a good relationship – between NATO and Russia. We believe that we need to improve relations in both directions, “- said Appathurai.
He said that “it should also be noted that the new government of Georgia focuses on the improvement of relations with Russia.”
As for the future expansion of NATO, Appathurai said that “the starting point for the alliance is that the decision on expansion is made by NATO representatives.”
“At the Bucharest Summit, it was agreed that Georgia will become NATO member, and then on any summit was not called into question,” – said Appathurai.
Recall that Appathurai arrived in Georgia on the night of October 18.
