Georgian media reports that Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Eric Rubin said at a press briefing at the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi said that the stay of Russian troops in Georgian territory is unacceptable.
He especially stressed, ‘The U.S. position regarding obligations undertaken by Russia in 2008 that states it must fulfill and withdraw its troops from Georgian territory, has not changed.” He added that the U.S. has a clear and firm position on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.
Rubin though declined to comment on statements made by the leader of the Georgian Dream coalition Bidzina Ivanishvili on Georgia’s participation at the Sochi Olympics. “It would be inappropriate to answer a specific question related to Georgia’s foreign policy direction. I only express the thoughts that arose during my stay. U.S. relations with Georgia will be firm and strengthen further,” he said.
