Giving a speech during the opening ceremonyof the annual conference of Armenian Economic Union, RA PM TigranSargsyan made a remarkable statement on poverty in Armenia.
“We must overcome poverty in RA, which is 30% of population and this is a great threat for us”- he said.
It means that about 30% of RA population (recent estimate 35.8%) is poor. “Haykakan Zhamanak” writes that this estimate is counted from official population number, which is 3 million. Thus, more than 1 million people in Armenia live below the level of poverty. Taking into consideration the population is actually 2.5-2.7 million, the real level of poverty in Armenian is higher. Moreover, the poverty increases day by day. In 2001 in Paris during the meeting with donor states and organizations, Armenian representative of Universal Bank said that the poor in Armenia comprise 680 thousand of population.
