“Though depriving MP Vardan Oskanian of immunity by the National Assembly is considered as a part of the legal process, but it always has a political element. In other words, the NA deputies are given the right to decide the political freedom of the nation, but do they consider credible that legal arguments presented by the prosecution or not?” responded the Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) Karen Andreasyan, answering the question of reporters.
“We cannot comment because if the case is under investigation or trial, and the MP is entitled to tell his position concerning immunity, human rights defender is not allowed to intervene. Therefore, in many cases, unfortunately, at that stage we are out of the case to interfere in the process, “said K. Andreasyan
To the observation of reporters that in the NA the Prosecutor General and the ruling party, who presented V. Oskanian as defendant claim by common consent that the case has no political context, but only the legal one, the Ombudsman said.
“I say that they can vote with their conscience in mind, of course, guided by legal principles, but it is obvious that they will also be vote by political motives. And to say that this is a legal process, then as a person and a professional, I do not honestly believe it. ”
