During 4 years seminars were carried out in Armenia for financial journalists organized by Thomson Reuters. In the framework of trainings the representatives of Reuters Nigel Steals and Thomas Atkins carried out lessons with a group of journalists from Armenian mass media who deal with the financial sector as well as with people. During the press conference on October 5th the guests from the United Kingdom summed up the results of the work done and shared their impressions with journalists.
“Economics and finance is sphere that affects each and every member of the society. The task of a financial journalist is to gather, analyze and present the information in the way that the audience is able to perceive.”- stressed the specialist of financial trainings of Reuters Thomas Atkins.
According to his words the colleagues tried to explain the Armenian journalists that there exist 3 criteria they must correspond to – accuracy, unbiased and independent approach and honesty. The members of the conference found it hard to answer to which degree is it possible to follow these rules in Armenia.
“We are only 4 days in Armenia and do not know much details. But financial journalism is the sphere where the journalist must struggle for information, must deepen his knowledge and raise his qualification.”- noted Nigel Steals.
The guests of the conference agreed on the point that financial journalist is as good as his sources of information. “I can say that the problems of sources are sharp in Armenia. Generally the whole world faces this problem.”- he noted.
To the question of possibility of further cooperation with Armenian journalists, the representatives of Reuters noted that there are no concrete plans yet as it takes a year to make a project.
Reuters carries out trainings in 130 countries in the world where more than 7000 journalists take part. The members of the seminars enter the club of Reuters.
