Consul of Georgia in Turkey Gela Japaridze resigned. According to him, as a Consul of Georgia, who for many years acted in good faith and primary responsibility to protect the rights of Georgian citizens, including the rights of Georgian prisoners in Turkey, such a treatment of prisoners in their homeland is unacceptable.
“The last three days, I was hoping that the appropriate services will take concrete steps regarding the incident to strict punishment of all participants of torture, but that did not happen. This is why I protest against the tragic event, expressing solidarity to prisoners whose rights have been violated, and I leave my post, “- said the consul.
He noted that over the years, the Georgian and foreign NGOs, as well as the Public Defender of Georgia spread reports on a dire situation in the penitentiary system of cruel and undue treatment of detainees and increased mortality among prisoners. Unfortunately, the authorities did not take adequate measures to bring all participants to justice and punish according to the law, which caused chaos and syndrome of impunity in the system.
