During the joint press conference of the Armenian FM Edward Nalbandyan and the deputy PM and FM of Luxembourg Jean Asselbourn few questions were raised about the “Safarov Affair”. The questions discussed referred to the triangle Azerbaijan-Hungary-Armenia and the recent developments around the policies of these countries.
To the commentary about the Hungarian FM’s letter, where he wished to regulate relations with Armenia and at the same time threatened that the decision of ceasing diplomatic relations with Hungary can lead to negative results, Nalbandyan replied that Hungarian FM Martoni’s letter was published, but at the same time the shock among international public and their reaction is obvious. He added that what Azerbaijan and Hungary say today is no less shocking. “Hungarian governmental and official representatives say that the process of the deal was transparent, whereas the senior Azerbaijani officials say that the negotiations were held secretly.”
Edward Nalbandyan went on elaborating that Hungarian party has sent notes, letters to the accredited Embassies in Budapest, expressing its concern about Safarov’s pardon, but at the same time the letter is concluded that Hungary will continue its strategic cooperation with Azerbaijan.
The president of Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly announced that Safarov’s extradition is an exploitative manifestation of Strasbourg convention and European convention.
Referring to this statement Armenian FM said that all these reactions are to urge Hungary to take responsibility for this affair.
In answer to the commentary that Safarov’s extradition was realized in the frames of international organizations, Nalbandyan replied that the reaction of international agencies was monotonous and it condemns this deal.
