Georgian media reports that Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Georgia, Konstantin Vardzelashvili , alongside with the representatives of Germany, Great Britain, Israel, Algeria, Egypt, Argentina, Mauritius, and Costa Rica was elected to the UN Committee on Human Rights for 2013-2016.
As reported, his candidacy was supported by 133 of the 167 members of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
UN Committee on Human Rights is composed of 18 independent experts, and the main function is to control the obligations of State parties to the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia reports that this event, the election of Professor Vardzelashvili as committee member, is recognition of Georgia’s law school and an important victory for Georgian diplomacy.
