Israeli representative Noam Bettan said he was shocked by the protests during the Eurovision semi-final. During his performance in Vienna, chants of “Stop the genocide” were heard in the hall, and several spectators holding signs reading “Free Palestine” were removed.
The singer said he was prepared for such a reaction, but the real situation was much more difficult. “I was shocked for a moment, but then I focused on the people who supported me,” he said.
Israel’s participation in the contest has been the focus of criticism due to the war in Gaza. This year, public broadcasters from five countries boycotted the contest, saying that Israel’s presence was incompatible with their values. Despite the protests, Bettan advanced to the final and will perform again on Saturday.
