Chinese President Xi Jinping made a tough statement during his summit with Donald Trump, emphasizing that relations between Beijing and Washington could turn into a direct conflict if the Taiwan issue is not properly resolved.
According to the Chinese leader, the Taiwan issue is the most important and sensitive point in Sino-US relations, on which any miscalculation could have devastating consequences.
As reported by the Chinese state television CCTV, Xi stressed that mishandling the issue could push the two superpowers into a clash or even a military conflict, pushing the entire bilateral relationship to an extremely dangerous level. This is a direct signal to the US administration that Beijing views any hesitation over the status of the self-governing island as crossing a red line.
The Chinese state news agency Xinhua also disseminated similar information, quoting President Xi, who said an improper approach to the Taiwan issue could lead the countries to a “very dangerous point.”
