Meta’s smart glasses, the Ray-Ban Meta, have sparked a major privacy debate, even as their sales have been growing rapidly. The problem is that the glasses have a hidden camera that can easily be used to record people secretly. According to the BBC, some people are using them without their consent, especially to film women and share the videos online.
Since filming in public is generally legal, victims often have no legal recourse. Sometimes, even requests to delete the videos are rejected. Despite the criticism, Meta’s glasses are very popular, with more than 7 million pairs sold. They were created in partnership with EssilorLuxottica and look like regular Ray-Bans, but include a camera, speakers, and AI features.
