UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government has suffered its first loss: Housing and Local Government Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh has resigned after the party’s defeat in local elections.
In announcing her resignation, she called on Starmer to “do the right thing for the country” and set a clear timetable for her departure.
Fahnbulleh, a representative of the Labor Party’s left wing, said the government had not acted with the vision and pace that voters expected.
He said the current cabinet had failed to govern as a Labor force clear in its values and strong in its beliefs. This is a serious blow to Starmer’s administration, which is already under increasing pressure.
Starmer said during a cabinet meeting that he would not resign despite the defeat in the local elections. He noted that he takes responsibility for the results, but stressed that a process of challenging the party’s leadership has not yet begun.
