The head of the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, announced that about 1,500 ships and 20,000 sailors have been stranded in the Persian Gulf due to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
The blockade began in late February, after the start of a military conflict with the United States and Israel, which poses a serious threat to global energy supplies.
According to Dominguez, 10 sailors have already been killed in more than 30 attacks. He emphasized that innocent people have become hostages of a geopolitical situation beyond their control.
The head of the IMO called for refraining from sending ships to the Persian Gulf to avoid new casualties and huge economic losses.
