The United States and Iran have exchanged fire in the most serious test of a month-long ceasefire.
However, Iran has said the situation has calmed down, and the United States has said it does not seek escalation.
The resumption of hostilities came as Washington awaited Iran’s response to the US proposal.
The Iranian military said the US had struck two ships that had entered the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian territory. The US military said it had returned fire in response to the Iranian attacks.
Trump told reporters that the ceasefire was still in effect and tried to downplay the incident.
“They were trying to get a hold of us today. We defeated them,” Trump said.
