Europe’s first large elephant sanctuary is being built to provide a more natural environment for animals transferred from circuses and zoos. The first resident of the sanctuary in Portugal will be Jules, the country’s last circus elephant. She will be moved next month to the Pangea sanctuary in the Alentejo region. She will be joined by Kariba, a female African elephant being moved from a Belgian zoo, where she has long lived alone.
