US President Donald Trump has said he may soon reduce the US military presence in Germany. This comes amid ongoing disagreements with Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the US-Israeli war against Iran.
“The United States is studying and reviewing the issue of a possible reduction of troops in Germany, a decision on which will be made in the near future,” Trump wrote on social media.
Trump made the threat after Merz said earlier this week that the Iranian leadership was “humiliating” the US and criticized Washington for its lack of strategy in the war. Trump, in turn, has repeatedly criticized NATO for refusing to assist the US in the two-month-old war.
Earlier on Wednesday, Merz said his personal relationship with Trump remains “as good as ever,” but added that he “had doubts about the war in Iran from the very beginning.”
During his first term in the White House, Trump also sought to reduce US troop levels in Germany, arguing that the country was spending too little on defense.
