On Hatteras Island, off the coast of North Carolina, the phrase “moving a house” is no longer a metaphor: here, entire houses are literally lifted onto huge stilts, put on wheels, and transported inland to save them from the “captivity” of the ocean. In recent months, powerful waves from the Atlantic Ocean have already destroyed dozens of homes on the island. Since September alone, 19 homes have been destroyed.
