At Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, human-like robots could soon replace human workers. They are expected to be used to handle baggage and cargo, helping to ease the country’s labor shortage. Japan Airlines is starting a pilot program in early May that will see Chinese-made human-like robots working at the airport. The goal is to make them a permanent solution going forward, given Japan’s growing labor shortage.
The robots will operate on the runways of Haneda Airport, handling passengers’ luggage and cargo. The airport handles more than 60 million passengers a year. According to the project’s organizers, the use of robots will help reduce people’s physical workload, but important security and control functions will remain in human hands.
