The White House is preparing to present its official response and counterproposals to the initiative received from Iran regarding the cessation of military operations in the coming days.
Reuters, citing an anonymous American official, reports that US President Donald Trump is dissatisfied with Tehran’s proposal and treats it with extreme skepticism. The key reason for the administration’s dissatisfaction is that the document submitted by the Iranian side does not mention the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.
The proposal, transmitted by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi through Pakistan, was discussed at the White House on Monday, with the president and his advisers in attendance.
According to the source, Trump made it clear that he does not like the proposal in its current form because it does not address fundamental strategic problems of importance to Washington.
Thus, despite Tehran’s attempts to achieve a ceasefire or a reduction in military tensions, Washington continues to insist on the need for a comprehensive agreement, which would also include nuclear deterrence mechanisms.
