King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom have arrived in the United States. The four-day visit comes amid tensions between Trump and the UK government over the Iran war.
After landing at Joint Air Force Base Andrews and a brief welcoming ceremony, the king and queen traveled to the White House. There, they were greeted by Donald and Melania Trump. A private tea party was held, after which the British royal couple and the US president and first lady attended a reception in the garden of the British ambassador’s residence in Washington, attended by a wider circle of guests.
The last time a similar reception in Washington was held in the garden was in 1939, when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth hosted it.
The state visit also comes at a time of serious crisis in Anglo-American relations. Last week, Trump told the BBC that the visit could “definitely” help the countries mend their ties.
Charles III will address Congress. This will be the second such address in history – the first was given to Congress by Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. After that, he and Camilla will travel to New York to attend an event commemorating the September 11 attacks.
