Astronomers have captured the so-called “breathing” of the solar system for the first time using X-rays. It occurs when the stream of charged particles from the Sun, the solar wind, collides with Earth’s atmosphere and the heliosphere, the protective layer surrounding the system. The study was conducted with the eROSITA space telescope, which is located about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. Scientists have found that this “soft X-ray” emission arises from the interaction of ions and neutral atoms in the solar wind.
