The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of withdrawing American troops from NATO member states that have refused to support Washington during military operations against Iran. According to The Wall Street Journal, the draft being developed envisages the transfer of military personnel and equipment to states that have been more loyal allies during the war.
This plan, which has already received the support of senior White House officials, is considered a softer, yet practical, alternative to Trump’s previous threats to withdraw completely from NATO. According to administration representatives, it is possible to close American military bases in at least one European country, with Germany or Spain being mentioned as the main candidates.
At the same time, a possible increase in the American contingent is expected in Poland, Romania, Lithuania, and Greece. Washington classifies these countries as reliable allies that have stood by the United States during the Iranian crisis.
Analysts note that such a redeployment of troops could lead to a closer approach of American forces to Russia’s borders. It is predicted that these moves will meet with serious resistance and discontent from official Moscow, further straining the international security system.
