US President Donald Trump has said he is prepared to suspend military strikes against Iran for two weeks if the Strait of Hormuz is immediately reopened.
He said this would require the full, safe, and immediate restoration of shipping through the strategically important waterway. Meeting this demand could lead to a bilateral ceasefire.
Trump said the US had already achieved key military objectives and was making progress towards a possible long-term agreement with Iran. He also mentioned that Tehran had submitted a 10-point proposal, which they were considering as a foundation for negotiations.
The two-week pause is expected to allow the parties to finally agree on the terms of a possible peace accord.
“Based on my conversations with Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir and their request to postpone the use of destructive force against Iran tonight, provided that the Islamic Republic of Iran is prepared to fully, immediately, and safely open the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to a two-week suspension of Iranian bombing and aggression.
This will be a bilateral ceasefire. We have exceeded our military objectives and are close to finalizing a long-term peace agreement with Iran and broader regional stability, prompting this bilateral ceasefire. We have received a 10-point proposal from Iran that provides a workable basis for negotiations.
The US and Iran have nearly resolved all issues, and they expect to reach an agreement within two weeks. On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and on behalf of the countries of the Middle East, it is an honor to bring this long-standing issue closer to resolution,” he wrote.
