Vietnam’s parliament has elected Communist Party General Secretary To Lam as the country’s president.
The parliament’s website says that all 495 members of parliament present at the session supported the Communist Party’s nomination. Five members were absent. Officials said the nominations for the country’s top posts were finalized at a meeting in late March.
The former head of public security now has a double mandate to lead the country for the next five years. In January, he was re-elected as party general secretary for a second term.
The parliament is also set to elect a new prime minister to replace outgoing Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
