The new animated film, Super Mario Galaxy, has become one of the year’s strongest debuts. Despite mixed reviews, the film has generated significant interest among audiences and has grossed about $372.5 million in its first days at the global box office.
The film, created in collaboration with Illumination and Nintendo, has earned $190.1 million in North America in five days alone and $130.9 million over the weekend. In international markets, the film brought in another $ 182.4 million. The largest income was recorded in Mexico at $29.1 million.
Despite the relatively low critical ratings (about 40%), audience response has been much more positive. For comparison, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in 2023, was also a great success, grossing more than $1.3 billion at the global box office.
The new film has yet to be shown in Japan, where it is scheduled to premiere later this month.
