Scientists from Flinders University in Australia predict that the Earth cannot cope with population growth. According to the study, if the current growth rate continues, Earth’s population will reach 12.4 billion by the end of the 2070s, putting the planet in a critical state.
Scientists emphasize that the Earth cannot meet the needs of even the current population without a fundamental transformation of land, water, energy, biodiversity, and resource use.
According to the study’s authors, Earth’s safe and sustainable population is about 2.5 billion people, which corresponds to the level of the middle of the 20th century. Scientists call on society to reconsider its approaches to resource use to prevent catastrophic events for the Earth in the future.
