The UN human rights chief has warned of a crackdown on freedom of expression in the Middle East, Israel, and the United States.
“We are witnessing a sharp increase in the control of civil space in the region, with governments imposing severe restrictions on citizens’ freedom of expression and peaceful assembly,” Volker Türk said in a statement.
Türk also condemned “attempts to restrict media freedom,” in particular restrictions imposed by Israeli military censors, as well as the threat by the US Federal Communications Commission to revoke broadcast licenses for media outlets that cover events deemed critical of the war.
