Several leading EU countries have accused Hungary of undermining the process of supporting Ukraine. Budapest has again blocked a new package of EU economic sanctions against Moscow and a loan intended to provide military and financial support to Ukraine.
Germany, France, and several other EU countries failed on Monday to persuade Viktor Orban’s government to approve the latest package of EU sanctions and a loan intended to cover Ukraine’s military and financial needs.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called Hungary’s actions “political sabotage.”
The dispute threatens to overshadow a planned show of solidarity between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his key European partners.
“Today, amidst the geopolitical noise, this war remains the most important question of our era. It raises the question of whether the freedom of Ukrainians and Europeans will be preserved. Our collective response is clear: Russia is not winning this war and will not win,” said UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
He added that the UK would continue to stand by Ukraine “until a just and lasting peace is achieved and beyond.”
