The White House and Pentagon are discussing possible strikes on Iranian military targets, with the US military set to be ready as early as Saturday.
While President Donald Trump has yet to make a final decision, there has been significant military activity in the region. The USS Gerald R. Ford is joining the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, and some units are being temporarily withdrawn from the Middle East to avoid a potential Iranian retaliation.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said that while diplomacy remains a priority, the nuclear talks in Geneva have not yet yielded any significant results, and the parties are far from an agreement.
“Iran would be very wise to make a deal with President Trump and his administration,” she said.
Both US officials told Axios that President Trump had invited his top advisers to a Wednesday meeting on the crisis with Iran.
Trump was briefed on the nuclear talks in Geneva earlier this week, and the group discussed next steps.
