After the Artemis 1 mission in 2022, it was discovered that parts of the Orion spacecraft’s heat shield had been damaged during re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. After the flight, NASA found more than 100 damaged spots. The cause was a special material: gases formed inside it during re-entry did not have time to escape, leading to cracks and small pieces breaking off. Despite this, Orion landed safely, and if there were a crew, they would not have been in danger.
