Billionaire Elon Musk has said that SpaceX is focused on building a “self-sustaining city” on the Moon that could be built “in less than a decade.” He noted that a similar project on Mars would take much longer.
Musk noted that travel to Mars would only be possible if the planets aligned every 26 months, while travel to the Moon is possible every ten days.
“Travel to Mars would only be possible if the planets aligned every 26 months (a six-month trip), while we can fly to the Moon every 10 days (a two-day trip). This means we could build a city on the Moon much faster than one on Mars.
However, SpaceX will also strive to build a city on Mars and will begin doing so in about 5-7 years, but the primary goal is to secure the future of civilization, and on the Moon it will be faster,” Elon Musk wrote on his X page.
