In the Black Sea, on the Bakalyan islet, satellites have captured a rare phenomenon: a large glacial field measuring more than 7 kilometers. From space, it really resembles an iceberg, doesn’t it?, wrote Levon Azizyan, director of the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center, on his social network page.
“However, of course, we are not talking about a real iceberg of glacial origin. This ice was formed directly in the sea and is classified as a floating ice mass. The phenomenon is due to the peculiarities of Karkinit Bay. It is shallow and penetrates deeply into the land, so the water here can freeze at sub-zero temperatures during prolonged frosts.
The formed snow (шуга) and icebergs, under the influence of strong northerly winds, merge into large masses and are pressed toward the coast. Scientists note that ice does not form in this region every winter and that such large-scale ice fields are rare.
