The US military has shot down an Iranian Shahed-139 drone. It approached the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said. Reuters first reported the incident.
The strike was carried out by an F-35C fighter jet in self-defense and to ensure the safety of the aircraft carrier’s crew.
Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations declined to comment. Iran’s state-run Tasnim news agency reported that one drone had lost contact in international waters, but the cause was not yet known.
The incident came as diplomats are trying to broker nuclear talks between Iran and the US.
US President Donald Trump warned on Tuesday that “bad things” would happen if a deal was not reached, given that US naval forces were moving towards Iran.
