Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, 53, the son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, was killed by unknown assailants in his home in the town of Zintan (about 160 km southwest of Tripoli).
Four armed assailants broke into the house, disabled the security cameras, and killed Saif al-Islam in a “direct encounter.” This information was also confirmed by his lawyer Marcel Chekkaldini, who told AFP that the identity of the attackers and the motives for the crime were still unknown.
According to the lawyer, about 10 days ago, one of Gaddafi’s close associates warned of “serious security problems.” According to Libyan media, the attack took place in the garden of the house, where Gaddafi received a fatal gunshot wound.
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was considered one of the most influential figures in Libya until 2011. In 2021, he attempted to run in the presidential elections but was unable to register.
