Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has warned that any US attack on Iran would lead to a regional conflict.
“The Americans should know that if they start a war, this time it will be a regional war,” Khamenei said.
“Trump keeps saying that he has brought ships… The Iranian people will not be afraid of such things,” he said.
The remarks came as the US sent the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to the region and Iran began naval exercises in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait is about 33 km wide at its narrowest point, between Iran and Oman. About a fifth of the world’s oil trade passes through it. Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the Strait in the past if attacked.
