The Supreme Mejlis of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic has initiated amendments to align local legislation with the Constitution of Azerbaijan. References to the 1921 treaties as the basis for autonomy will be removed from the text, while the region’s status within the country will remain unchanged.
This Constitution will be based on the principles enshrined in the Declaration “On the Restoration of the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan” of August 30, 1991, the Constitutional Law “On the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan” of October 18, 1991, as well as the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted by a national referendum on November 12, 1995.
After discussions, the draft law was adopted by a second vote.
