The massive storm, which is sweeping from the southern Rocky Mountains to New England, has already affected about half of the US population.
According to the National Weather Service, more than 180 million people in 37 states have been affected by this emergency. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have declared states of emergency.
NBC reports at least seven deaths: two in Louisiana, one in Texas, one in Kansas, and three in Tennessee. In the Northeast, the snow layer could reach 60 centimeters.
More than 14,400 flights have been canceled, the highest number since COVID. New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the situation as an “Arctic blockade,” noting that temperatures at the Canadian border have dropped to -45 degrees.
