According to the WSJ, Donald Trump accepted Machado’s Nobel Peace Prize, but offered nothing in return.
“Despite the symbolic gesture, Machado received no public support from Trump. Instead, he reaffirmed his willingness to negotiate with Venezuela’s socialist regime rather than implement a democratic transition,” the publication writes.
The WSJ notes that Maria Corina Machado has not appeared publicly with the US president, suggesting Trump’s reluctance to seek rapprochement with Venezuelan opposition forces.
“Machado’s supporters had hoped that Trump would provide assurances that the United States would soon undertake a democratic transition; they were disappointed. The White House made it clear that this was a courtesy meeting and is unlikely to influence Trump’s approach,” the article notes.
