SpaceX has made Starlink free in Iran amid mass protests and a near-total internet shutdown.
Authorities have been cutting off the connection since January 8, even though Starlink is officially banned in the country.
Tehran is rapidly building a closed “internal internet”: only state-run search engines, maps, messaging apps, and heavily censored content are allowed.
According to sources, a preliminary version is already operating in the country and is more isolated from the outside world than the Chinese model.
Meanwhile, the death toll from killings by security forces to suppress protests is rapidly rising.
