The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that the Academy Awards will leave ABC in 2029 and will move entirely to YouTube.
YouTube will receive exclusive global streaming rights to the awards ceremony until 2033. It will become the leading platform for the Oscars, including red carpet coverage, the announcement of the nominees, and other related events. The broadcast will be free, available worldwide, in multiple languages , and with closed captions.
The decision is historic, as the Oscars become the first major awards ceremony to abandon television broadcasts completely. The Academy leadership notes that the partnership with YouTube will allow it to reach a broader, especially younger, international audience.
ABC, which has been the leading broadcaster of the Oscars for more than half a century, has announced that it will broadcast the awards ceremony for three more years and will participate in the 100th anniversary event in 2028.
