There are three documents under discussion with the United States and the Europeans as part of the peace process, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in response to reporters’ questions.
“There is a 20-point framework document that is constantly changing. The second document concerns security guarantees, the third concerns the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine,” he said.
He stressed that Ukraine and its European partners are finalizing a new peace plan and are preparing to present it to the United States on Wednesday.
Zelensky also responded to US President Donald Trump’s observation that it is time to hold elections in Ukraine and that “they are using the war to avoid elections.”
“The idea that elections are not being held in Ukraine because I am clinging to the presidency is a completely inadequate narrative. I am ready for elections,” Zelensky said.
According to him, there are “two issues” regarding the holding of elections.
“First of all, security. How can we hold them? How can we do it under fire, under missiles? Regarding our armed forces. The question is, how will they vote?
And the second question is the legislative basis for the legality of holding elections. And since this issue is raised today by the US President and our partners, I will answer very briefly: I am ready for elections,” he said, adding that the issue of holding elections in Ukraine “is a matter for the Ukrainian people, not the peoples of other countries.”
The Ukrainian president also asked the United States, together with Europe, to ensure the security of voting in the elections.
“If this is done, Ukraine will be able to hold elections within 60 days,” Zelensky added.
