Over the past three years, Russian troops have managed to capture only 1.45% of Ukraine’s territory, while Russia’s losses in workforce are not comparable to its “successes.” According to preliminary data, Russia may have lost up to 1% of its pre-war adult male population in the war, The Economist reports.
Since the start of the large-scale invasion, Russia’s losses on the battlefield have amounted to 1-1.35 million people. The magazine reached this conclusion based on open data, information from sources, and reports. It is noted that Russian losses exceed the number of US soldiers killed and wounded during the entire Second World War.
The Russians also captured 4,562 km² of Ukrainian territory in 2025 and 3,734 km² in 2024. In November 2025, Russia had its highest monthly advance rate in a year, capturing 690 km².
However, despite Russia’s advance accelerating slightly in 2025 due to numerous problems in Ukraine, the overall progress of the Russians remains very slow. In general, over the past three years, since the fall of 2022, Russia has captured only an additional 1.45% of Ukraine’s territory.
It should be noted that according to the latest data from the General Staff of Ukraine, the total combat losses of the Russian invaders amounted to 1.2 million people.
