Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and US President Donald Trump spoke by telephone. According to Reuters, this was their first meeting since the diplomatic tensions between Japan and Beijing.
“President Trump briefly presented the state of US-China relations,” Takaichi told reporters, declining to elaborate.
“President Trump said that we are very good friends, and he would be happy if I called at any time,” he added.
The White House has not yet released details.
The phone conversation with the Japanese Prime Minister takes place after the Trump-Xinping phone conversation.
Recall that earlier this month, the Japanese Prime Minister stated in parliament that if China attacks Taiwan, it could lead to a military response from Japan. Beijing immediately reacted violently, even announcing a travel boycott to Japan.
Chinese President Xi Jinping told Trump on Monday that Taiwan’s “return to China” was an essential part of Beijing’s vision for a world order, according to China’s official Xinhua News Agency. Trump, in a post on Truth Social, highlighted progress in trade talks but made no mention of discussions with Xi on Taiwan.
