Artificial intelligence (AI) is being utilized as a new tool in several hospitals in the UK to rapidly detect fractures and dislocations, enabling doctors to provide more efficient treatment.
The innovative project is scheduled to commence later this month and will run for a period of two years. NHS England is implementing it, and the medical departments of the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust will participate in the pilot phase.
The clarification states that AI will act only as a supplement; it will not replace doctors but will help them navigate complex cases more quickly. While the technology will be used for various types of X-ray examinations, it will not be used on patients under the age of two, nor on the chest, spine, skull, face, or soft tissue.
The initiative aims to reduce the workload of emergency departments, expedite diagnosis, and decrease waiting times for patients, while maintaining high standards of responsibility for the medical examiner.
