The second President of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, stated in his November 9 interview that point 9 of the trilateral statement did not imply a corridor logic; moreover, it should have been adhered to.
“There are obvious contradictions in Robert Kocharyan’s formulation. Initially, he notes that point 9 exhibits symmetry with the Lachin corridor, which, according to their logic, already implies the existence of a corridor. Still, the next moment, he declares that it was not a corridor from the beginning,” political scientist Edgar Arakelyan said in an interview with Radar Armenia.
According to him, these contradictions are not new: years ago, Kocharyan and his former Foreign Minister, Vartan Oskanyan, were stating that the Prime Minister of Armenia had given a verbal promise to provide a corridor. According to Arakelyan, these changing interpretations are conditioned not by the content of the documents, but by political expediency.
“These people interpret everything according to the expediency of the moment. Now they say they should have stuck to that document. Still, in the past, they said it was a capitulation document and unacceptable for the Republic of Armenia,” the political scientist said, emphasizing that now it seems to have become a very acceptable and glorious document. “This speaks to one thing: for them, the most important thing is to serve their narrow personal-political interests, not the interests of the people of the Republic of Armenia and Artsakh.”
The political scientist also comments on the current domestic political situation and upcoming processes. In his assessment, the tension is expected to increase. “Elections are coming up, and the tensions will be much greater than today. Especially from January, we will enter the pre-election phase, and the developments will be much more active and intense,” Edgar Arakelyan emphasizes.
