The largest US aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, has arrived in the Caribbean Sea.
President Donald Trump, who ordered the deployment, said he was doing so as part of the fight against drug trafficking from Venezuela.
The Pentagon announced Trump’s order on October 24, when the carrier group was in the North Sea, off the coast of Europe.
For several months, the US Navy and aircraft have been striking small ships in the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean, which, according to the US leadership, are transporting drugs. They have already carried out at least 19 strikes, as a result of which at least 76 people have been killed.
Venezuelan leader, leftist socialist Nicolas Maduro, and other representatives of the country’s leadership accuse the US of creating an artificial crisis to remove them from power.
According to the US Navy, on November 11, the aircraft carrier group entered the US Southern Command’s area of responsibility, which includes the Caribbean Sea and several Latin American countries.
Pentagon press secretary Sean Parnell noted that the presence of the group led by the “Gerald Ford” in the Caribbean Sea will allow the US to control and prevent drug trafficking in that region more effectively.
